Calling Major Tom is a funny, uplifting tale of friendship and community about a man who has given up on the world...but discovers in the most unlikely way that it might not have given up on him.

We all know someone like Thomas. The grumpy next-door neighbour who complains to the residents' committee about the state of your front lawn. The man who tuts when you don't have the correct change at the checkout. The colleague who sends an all-company email when you accidentally use the last drop of milk.

Thomas is very happy to be on his own, far away from other people and their problems. But beneath his cranky exterior lies a story and a sadness that is familiar to us all. And he's about to encounter a family who will change his view of the world.

An irresistible and heartwarming tale of a very unexpected friendship, perfect for fans of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and A Man Called Ove.

You'll laugh, you'll cry and you will cheer on all the curmudgeons in your life.

Read by David Thorpe.

Had no idea this was about a trip to Mars ! Just finished reading Andy Weir's The Martian - and I do NOT do sci-fi. Well, let's rephrase - I didn't do sci-fi. There are many aspects of this book which stretch credibility to its limits and, like Tom Major's very journey to Mars - beyond. But that is not how one should approach this book, which I can best describe as a modern, 21st century Ealing comedy. Farce plays a central rôle to the action yet it is tempered by heartstrings being pulled over the crisis that befalls 10 yr old James and his sister, Ellie. Described as a "feelgood" novel, the ending is somewhat predictable but to get there, you will enjoy the ride. What I liked most is the way the author does not dwell on misfortune for the sake of getting a laugh, so that Tom's personal crisis for example, is credible. Characters are well defined and fit perfectly into the story. Of its type, this is certainly a light-hearted read yet I can guarantee you'll associate yourself with one of the characters.

Many thanks to TBC on Facebook and to Netgalley for an ARC of this book.
It took me a little while to warm to the principal characters in this book but once they hooked me I was right there with them! On paper the plot seems a little improbable but somehow it just works; this book made me laugh but also made me reflective and ,at times, a little sad. It reminds us that sometimes life deals us cards we do not expect and that are challenging to deal with but deal with them we do, all in our different ways. Tom may not approach life in the way we expect but his gruff exterior was always waiting there to unfurl.
The characters of Ellie, James and their Gran are beautifully crafted and utterly believable I wanted to reach out to them myself.
A lovely book that was a very pleasant surprise and had me pulling out my old albums too - got to be a good thing!
My reading of "Calling Major Tom" started slowly. I confess that I wasn't getting into the story. There were a number of plot lines that seemed just a bit disjointed. (Big hint - keep reading!)
But then, suddenly the story bloomed as all the plot lines started to merge. The grand scheme, the whole picture started to appear. Thomas Major seems to be a grumpy antisocial man. In the beginning it is very hard to like him at all, but as the character and the backstory develops we learn how he became this way. We also learn how he suddenly got picked to go to Mars on the British space voyage to start a pioneer colony.

Then we have James, Ellie and Nan. The two children are living with a grandmother who is starting to show signs of dementia. Ellie is trying to keep the family together. James is trying to survive school - and the accompanying bullies. They are living in a perfect storm. Until one day when Major Tom mistakenly calls Nan while trying to reach is ex-wife.
By the end of the book I was in happy tears - and hoping there is a sequel somehow.
This is a wonderful story. I miss the characters and hope there will be a sequel...years in the future.
This was a different book but really enjoyed it
Very well written , entertaining and touching , I truly enjoyed it. Puts you on the edge of your seat at times, makes u laugh out loud or tear up at others! Highly recommend
Extremely enjoyable book. Don't know about the "laugh out loud" part but a heart-warming book of fiction nonetheless. Thomas Major is a very intriguing character who gives the book heft and credibility. Ellie Ormerod brings out the father's heart in you.
JUST CANNOT GET INTO THIS BOOK, I DONT WANT TO CRITISIZE A BOOK I HAVENT READ TO THE END BUT SOMETIMES I THOUGHT WHOLE PAGES MUST BE MISSING!! I CERTAINLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE 'FEEL-GOOD' DESCRIPTION!!
